A boot lid that won’t stay up is more than an annoyance. It’s a knock on the head waiting to happen. The good news is that replacing bonnet, boot, tailgate and hatch struts is one of the easiest car jobs you can do yourself. Most cars need no special tools, and the job takes minutes.
What you’ll need
- Replacement struts (always replace in pairs)
- A flat-blade screwdriver
- A helper, or a prop such as a broom handle or piece of timber
- Safety glasses
Step 1: Get the right struts
Start by checking the existing strut. Look for a part number or force rating in Newtons printed on the body. Measure the extended length from the centre of one end fitting to the centre of the other.
Automotive struts are available for bonnets, boots, tailgates and hatches across all makes and models. If your car has aftermarket additions, like a rear spoiler or heavy tailgate accessory, you may need a stronger strut than the original.
Step 2: Support the lid
Open the boot or bonnet fully and have someone hold it, or wedge a solid prop in place. Never rely on a worn strut to hold the lid while you work. If it fails mid-job, the lid will drop.
Step 3: Remove the old strut
Most automotive struts use ball-socket end fittings held by a small metal clip. Slide a flat screwdriver under the clip and lift it slightly, about 3–4mm, then pull the strut off the ball stud. Don’t remove the clip completely. Repeat at the other end.
Some vehicles use bolted ends instead. In that case, simply undo the bolt.
Step 4: Fit the new strut
Check the orientation. In most cases the rod should point downward when the lid is closed. This keeps the seal lubricated and helps the strut last longer. Push each end fitting onto its ball stud until it clicks into place.
Step 5: Replace the second strut and test
Repeat for the other side. Remove the prop and slowly open and close the lid a few times. It should rise smoothly and hold steady at full height.
Why replace both?
Struts in a pair wear at the same rate. Replacing just one leaves an uneven load, which can twist the lid and wear the new strut faster.
Where to buy
Schutts Industrial supplies replacement and upgrade struts for car bonnets, boot lids, hatches and tailgates. Their struts are gassed in Melbourne with a 24–48 hour production time.
In South Australia, order through Gas Struts Adelaide for delivery to Adelaide in 4–6 business days. NSW drivers can use Gas Struts Sydney, with delivery to Sydney in 3–5 business days.
Ten minutes and a screwdriver is all it takes to make your boot or bonnet safe again.
